Lot Essay

Private Ernest Cornish enlisted in 1877 and served with 'G' Battery, Royal Horse Artillery at the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir. He transferred to the 19th Hussars in November 1883 in order to serve with his brother, Harry John Cornish (see below). Ernest Cornish continued to serve in Egypt and was present at the Battles of El-Teb, Tamaai and Kirbekan and was therefore entitled to the Egypt Medal with five clasps as above.

Private Harry John Cornish enlisted in 1881, initially with the 7th Hussars and then with the 19th. Serving in Egypt, he was present at the Battles of Tel-el-Kebir, El-Teb and Tamaai, but not at Abu Klea or in the Nile Expedition of 1884-85.
