Private Charles Edgar Jennings, a Londoner, was killed in action in France on 14.11.1914, while serving in the 2nd Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps. Attached to the 4th Guards Brigade, the Battalion had moved forward to the front line from 'Shrewsbury Forest' on 10.11.1914, its positions comprising a line of rifle pits just 150 yards from the enemy. Two days later the enemy attacked in force but was finally being driven back with heavy losses. Lieutenant J.H.S. Dimmer was awarded the V.C. for his bravery on this occasion.
