Troop Sergeant-Major James White was born in Sarksley, Essex and enlisted in the 23rd Light Dragoons in March 1803. He served in Portugal and Spain from June 1809 to March 1810 and was awarded the Military General Service Medal with the clasp for Talavera. Afterwards present at the Battle of Waterloo, where he served in Captain Cox's Troop, he was discharged in 1817. Re-enlisting later that year, White went on to serve with the 19th Lancers and the 6th Dragoons, was promoted to Troop Sergeant-Major in September 1825 and was finally discharged in March 1831.
