Lot Essay
Petty Officer 1st Class Charles Livermore, S.G.M., was decorated for his services on the occasion of the Ketch Confido, of Faversham, being stranded in Dublin Bay on 16.3.1903. Then employed by the Kingston Coast Guard Station as a Boatman, he would have originally received a large bronze Board of Trade Medal.
Born in Babraham, Cambridge in March 1874, Livermore joined the Royal Navy in March 1892 and enjoyed a series of shore and seagoing appointments until his advancement to Petty Officer 1st Class at the turn of the century. In March 1902, he joined the Coast Guard, and was variously stationed on the Irish coast until August 1914, when recalled to the Royal Navy. Employed as an Instructor until February 1919, Livermore returned to Coast Guard duties in Ireland on being released. He had been awarded his L.S. and G.C. Medal in May 1907.
