Lot Essay

The 'Empire State' model first appeared in 1934 as the Model 28, apparently available in black only. Subsequent models (with only minor differences) were 29, 31, 32 and 37. This example has no model number, but a list of patents (up to 1933) relates to Model 29 (also 75, 244 and 245), and the chassis is stamped A0033730. There is no backboard, nor any fixings for one. There are some hairline cracks in the sides, particularly at the base near the rear fixing screws for the chassis-mounting: the veining helps to disguise these.
