Lot Essay

The present picture is one of an extensive series of small copies by Teniers after Italian paintings in the collection of his patron, the Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, Governor of the Spanish Netherlands. These copies served as the basis for 243 engravings, subsequently published at the artist's expense in 1660 as the Theatrum Pictorium.

In the Theatrum Pictorium, the original from which Teniers made his copy is given to Titian. However, Morelli proposed an attribution to Lorenzo Lotto in 1893, and later commentators have confirmed this attribution. The original picture is now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (no. 576).
