Lot Essay

D'Hulst dates the present picture to c. 1616 on stylistic grounds, associating it with the artist's Adoration of the Shepherds, signed and dated 1616, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (D'Hulst, op. cit., 1982, pp. 66 and 70, fig. 38). Another version of the present picture was stated by Burchard to have been in a private collection at Reval (Tallinn) in 1927.
