Lot Essay

We are grateful to Mr Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution from a transparency. He notes that there is a version, almost of the same size but not signed, in the Frits Lugt collection (Fondation Custodia), Paris, which, by comparison with the present painting, he believes to be a studio work, possibly with some participation from the master. A copy of the lower left part was sold in these Rooms, 24 February 1984, lot 15.
