Lot Essay

Professor Ricardo Lattuada has identified the figures as the work of Nicola Vaccaro, from a transparency.

We are grateful to Dr. Erich Schleier for pointing out comparisons with two other works with similar figures by Vaccaro: The Angel appearing to Joachim and Anna, sold at Sotheby's, New York, 30 May 1991, lot 38, as signed with initials, and with Diana with her Attendants, sold at Sotheby's, London, 17 April 1991, lot 177, as by Paolo de Matteis but now attributed to Vaccaro by Schleier.
