Lot Essay

Andrea Zezza points out, loc. cit., that of the paintings by Marco Pino in private collections, the present work is that which has received the most critical attention. Catalogued by Georg Gronau, Mario Salmi and Giuseppe Fiocco for the Spinelli sale as a 'masterpiece' by Taddeo Zuccari, its true authorship was immediately recognized and published by Roberto Longhi, loc cit. Andrea Zezza has suggested a dating in the 1570s, during the artist's last period in Naples (private communication).
