1957 MERCEDES-BENZ 300Sc CABRIOLET A

First exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1951, the 300S model Mercedes-Benz was designed for the descriminating sports car enthusiast. The car set new standards of excellence far above contemporary cars of the day. Three body styles were available, the Coupe, Roadster and Cabriolet. Each car was hand-finished to exacting standards and the interior design and fittings were of the finest materials. For example, the dashboard with full complement of instruments was of Carpathian burled elm wood. Top grade leather adorned the cabin and luxury pile carpet was used throughout. The Cabriolet featured a fully padded convertible top. Personal luggage fitted neatly between the two spare wheels in the boot. Priced at $14,000, the Mercedes was built to bespoke standards and showed it handsomely.
This 1957 Cabriolet A is just superb in every respect; when purchased in 1986, the passionate Mercedes collector/owner set about comprehensively restoring it to the highest level. The history of the car deserves mention as it was supplied new to Mr. Renaldo Herrera in Monte Carlo, who had ordered it in two-tone red and black. Mercedes thought differently and supplied it in solid black, whereupon Mr. Herrera promptly had it repainted to his choice. He sold it in 1983 to a Venezuelan gentleman who in turn sold it in 1985 to the third owner. The first decision taken was to return the car to its original solid black color scheme. Then began a huge restoration process whereby the whole car was completely disassembled down to the bare chassis. The chassis was shotblasted and painted before reassembly by Burkholder's Body Shop in Paradise, PA. The extensive chrome work was all repaired and replated by Diehl & Son in Warminster, PA and the interior woodwork was beautifully refurbished by Wood Excel. The interior leather was refinished by Jim Krous of the Stone Barn who used new authentic leather from Roser in Germany. The engine was rebuilt by Michael Rosen and Reardon's Machine Shop in Lancaster, PA, all Mercedes-Benz specialists. Absolutely everything was redone and after two and a half years, the 300Sc was finished. A full account of the restoration was written up in The Star publication of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. There is also a full color photographic record of the restoration which is quite incredible.
The Mercedes has all of its original numbers. It comes with its original multi-band Becker radio, a full authentic tool kit, four separate Owners' Manuals in English, German, French and Spanish, an original unused Service Coupon Book, an original Parts Manual, a Shop Manual, two spare wheels, an original two-piece luggage set including coat hangers as well as a jack and related tire change equipment. The car was displayed at the Meadow Brook Hall Concours D'Elegance in August 1993 where it took a Second Place Blue Ribbon. For once, words do not seem to do justice to this car and we thoroughly recommend close inspection.
