1965 BENTLEY S3 CONTINENTAL DROPHEAD COUPE

In an effort to update the aging six cylinder engine, Rolls-Royce Bentley Motors introduced their new 6.2-liter V8 engine at the 1959 London Motor Show with the Silver Cloud II and Bentley S2. The engine was of classic American V8 configuration with pushrod overhead valves, central camshaft and crossflow heads. The block and cylinder heads were alloy and the fuel mixture was supplied by two horizontal SU HD6 carburetors. The next evolutionary development of the engine, the third generation S series, was launched in 1962 and included the S3 and the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III. Except for the adoption of quadruple headlights, it was difficult to differentiate at first glance between the S3 and previous models, but there were numerous technical and superficial changes such as a lower radiator shell which allowed a more pronounced shape in the bonnet line.
The most important changes were in the engine. The reworked cylinder heads were cast from a new alloy that included silicon. Larger HD8 SU carburetors were fitted and the compression ratio was raised to 9:1, with valve timing adjusted accordingly to produce more power from the engine.
The S3 Continental Drophead is an extremely rare vehicle; out of a production run of just 53 built, only 26 examples were made in left hand drive form. The S3 Continental chassis was the swan song for the finest creative efforts of the specialist coachbuilders, and this example by H.J. Mulliner, Park Ward is testimony to their elegant skills. This Bentley was delivered new in March 1965 to Geneva, Switzerland and the first owner is recorded as Mr. Paul Annik Weiler. Little else is known about the car until it was purchased by a prominent New York family in 1980. About seven or eight years ago the vehicle moved to the New England area. The current mileage is reading around 39,000km and owing to the condition of the vehicle this is believed to be from new. There is quite a large amount of receipts testifying to work spent on the vehicle. The top is black mohair, while the upholstery is beige leather. The woodwork is highly presentable. This handsome S3 naturally comes equipped with air conditioning and has power assisted steering, hood and windows. This rare Bentley Drophead shall provide stylish and comfortable open air motoring.
