The case with typical foliate-tied gilt-metal handle to the domed top applied with foliate cast gilt-metal mounts, piered ebony blind frieze fret to the front door with winged cherub swivel escutheons, simple moulded base, the five and three-quarter square dial signed Joseph Knibb London beneath the silvered chapter ring with finely pierced blued-steel hands and matted centre, unusual spandrels, vase-shaped pillars, verge escapement, pull quarter reapeat on Knibb's pinwheel system, with repeat cords from either sides running in pulleys set into the case sides, the tulip engraved backplate signed Joseph Knibb Londini fecit

Lot Essay

Joseph Knibb was born in 1640. Apprenticed to his cousin Samuel in 1655, he was removed to Oxford circa 1662 and was appointed a Freeman of the City in 1668. Removed to London in 1670 he was elected Freeman of the Clockmakers Company, and subsequently Steward in 1684 and Assistant in July 1689. Retiring in Hanslop Buckinghamshire, 1697, he died 1711.
