Lot Essay

A portrait of Wilkes, the Myddleton family scullion announcing dinner and ringing the ancient bell, had been set up above the courtyard clock, following the acquisition of the Welsh border castle of Chirk by Sir Thomas Myddleton in the late 16th century. A portrait of Wilkes, executed in 1730 and recorded in 'The Glass Pantry' in the 1814 inventory, still hangs in the Servants Hall at Chirk.
