The moulded rectangular top above a decorated frieze and above two panelled doors decorated with scrolling foliage, butterflies and stylised palmettes, the interior enclosing twelve drawers to each side, each drawer with the remains of a collection of moths and butterflies, the conforming side panels above a shaped apron, on bracket feet and brass castors

Lot Essay

The panels of the lepidopterist's cabinet are appropriately decorated with butterflies, together with geometric flowers that reflect the fashion promoted through the publications of Christopher Dresser (d. 1904), who trained as an art botanist at the South Kensington School of Design under the guidance of Owen Jones and prided himself as an 'ornamentist'
