Lot Essay

The seat frame enriched with Elizabethan 'spindle' turning was popularised through a chair pattern by George Bullock (d. 1813) illustrated in R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, September 1817. Related spindle enrichments featured on a suite of George IV furniture supplied to Peter Langford-Brooke (d. 1840) for Mere Hall, Cheshire and attributed to Messrs. Gillow of London and Lancaster (see Christie's Sale Catalogue, Mere Hall, Knutsford, Cheshire, Christie's House Sale, 23 May 1994, lots 85-91).
