In 1877 William Morris (d. 1896) studied English medieval bird patterns for the manufactury of woven cloth that he was establishing at Queen Square. He introduced this 'Bird' pattern the following year for the drawing room 'tapestry' wall-hangings of his London home at Kelmscot House, Hammersmith (Morris's pattern is illustrated in L. Parry, William Morris Textiles, London, 1983, p.63).
