Lot Essay

Such tunics would have been of particular interest to Mr Augustus Savile, who served as Master of Ceremonies to Queen Victoria and whose ancestor, in the 17th century, had served as Governor of Sheffield Castle. The Savile home, created in the Cistercian Abbey at Rufford, Nottinghamshire has been described as lying 'in a country of greenwood, and the ferny depths of the old forest of Sherwood' (Charles Latham In English Homes, London, 1904, pp. 201- 206).
