Lot Essay

This framed fragment is from an apse of a Romano-British mosaic pavement 2nd-4th century. It is possible that this section of English mosaic pavement of the Roman period may have been acquired by Matthew Piers Watt Boulton (d. 1894), who is also likely to have had a table made to display an Italian mosaic table-top bearing the date 1847 (see Christie's House Sale, Great Tew Park, 27-29 May 1987, lot 201).
