The 19th century fashion for Chinoiserie furnishings of trompe l'oeil bamboo was popularised by John Nash's 'Views of the Royal Pavilion, Brighton', 1826; and was particularly favoured for bedroom apartments hung with Chinese flowered paper such as those introduced by the 6th Duke of Devonshire at his picturesque Endsleigh House, Devon (G. Walkling, Antique Bamboo Furniture, London, 1979 and J. Cornforth, 'Endsleigh House - II', Country Life, 16 October 1997, p.65).
