Matiram (1617 - 1716 AD) was the court poet of Maharao Bhao Singh of Bundi. The Rasaraj describes the union and separation of two lovers and classifies the different kinds of heroines (nakiyas). This miniature depicts the Madhya Khandita Nakiya, an adolescent girl remonstrating with her lover who is shamefacedly returning after a night's absence with someone else. Radha and Krishna are often used to depict the lovers.
