Lot Essay

The clock celebrates the poets' Arcadian paradise, and displays 'Venus' doves in a rusticated triumphal arch attended by a festive faun, with bacchic cymbals at his feet, and his bacchante companion, who prepares to erect a herm statue to the fertility deity Pan. The 'biscuit' porcelain may have been executed by Charles Gabriel Sauvage (called Lemire) (d. 1827), who in 1781 became principal modeller at the Niderviller works, that had been established in 1749 by Adam-Phillipe, comte de Custine (d.1793).
