Lot Essay
The Norwich firm of William Freeman 'Carver, Gilder and Looking Glass Manufacturer', was listed at London Lane in the 1820s and early 1830s and at London Street, Pottergate from 1836-1850. Swan Lane, which is also included on this label, ran into London Street. His son William Philip Barnes Freeman, carver and gilder, was admitted a freeman of Norwich in 1835. His label, listing his London and Swan Lane address, features on three gilt and marble-topped tables at Blickling Hall, Norfolk, and are likely to have involved the work carried out at Gunton for Lady Caroline Suffield (d. 1850), following the death of William Assheton Harbord, 2nd Lord Suffield (d. 1821), (J. Maddison et al, Blickling Hall, 1987, p. 80).
