Lot Essay

This heraldic blind reflects the romantic Gothic taste of the early 19th century, such as the armorial-escutcheoned ceiling and walls introduced by George IV at Windsor Castle's St.George's Hall with assistance from Thomas Willement (see Lots 793 and 794). Similar trompe l'oeil stained glass blinds hung at Renishaw Hall, Derbyshire (see J. Fowler and J. Cornforth, English Decoration of the Eighteenth Century, London, 1974, p. 122).
