The plaster bust of George Granville Leveson-Gower, 2nd Marquess of Stafford and 1st Duke of Sutherland (d. 1833) is after the robed statue executed as a memorial to the Duke in 1833 from the noted sculptor and portrait-painter Sir Francis Chantrey, R.A. (d. 1841), and commissioned for the Cathedral church at Dornoch, Sutherland, by the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland (d. 1839) and George, 2nd Duke of Sutherland (d. 1861). The head was modelled on the marble bust commissioned from Chantrey in 1828 by Lord Farnborough for the British Institution (A. Yarrington et al., 'An Edition of the Ledger of Sir Francis Chantrey', Walpole Society, 1994, nos. 206b and 255a and fig. 129); while the drapery is likely to have been modelled by Joseph Theakston (d. 1842), who was in Chantrey's employ.
