ROSS, Horatio S. "Journal of Sporting Adventures in India from 1858 to 1862," oblong 4° (261 x 355mm.), manuscript journal of Ross's hunting trips in India, 71 pages, decorative title, 2 maps of Birzapore and Benares, text illustrated with 26 drawings and watercolours, 46 watercolours on 24 leaves inserted, contemporary half black morocco gilt (rubbed).
A fascinating account of Ross's adventures in Bengal in the late 1850s including elaborate accounts of his bear, wild boar and tiger hunting expeditions, handsomely illustrated with his own charming, but naive, sketches and watercolours of colonial life in India. Captain Horatio Ross (1801-86) is known principally as an amateur photographer and sportsman active in Scotland from the early 1840s. He was a founder-member and Vice-President of the Photographic Society of Scotland and is well-known for his photographs of hunting scenes.
