J.M. Brown, Lieutenant, R.N. Autograph manuscript journal of a tour of service with HMS Tyne in Newfoundland and Bermuda, 11 July 1828 - 11 June 1830, annotated 'Volume II', illustrated with 8 watercolours, showing HMS Tyne, Halifax, a 'Mudian boat', and Portsmouth harbour, TWO WATERCOLOURS DEPICTING BERMUDA IN 1830, annotated 'Anchorage off Ireland Island, Bermuda' and 'Wreck Hill, Island of Somerset, Bermuda', approximately 155 x 200mm., two printed illustrations, altogether 236 pages, 4to (numbered 1-172); with another describing a tour of service in the Aegean, 4 August 1836 - 12 May 1837, annotated 'Volume V', illustrated with 5 watercolours, depicting local views and costumes, 2 watercolour maps, 7 printed illustrations, approximately 181 pages, 4to (numbered 1-133), together with an album containing 22 watercolour views of the Aegean(volume 'II' and album disbound, occasional soiling and spotting).
The journal of a junior officer with the 'Experimental Squadron' off Newfoundland: the first journal opens dramatically with an account of the rescue of survivors of the wreck of the brig Dispatch, which had been carrying emigrants from Londonderry to Quebec and had been caught on rocks off Cape Ray. More important however are the rare early depictions of views in the Bermuda islands. (3)
