Lot Essay

The artist is probably to be identified with the author J. Boelen whose account of a voyage to South America and China, 1826-29 was published in three volumes in 1835 (Reize naar de Oost - en Westkust von Zuid-Amerika...etc., Amsterdam, 1835). The artist and author's Brazilian sojourn included seven weeks in Rio de Janeiro in 1826.
