Lot Essay

A photograph of Shackleton taken in Veiga's Punta Arenas studio in September 1916. Shackleton and his rescued party arrived in Punta Arenas on 3 September, to be welcomed by '8,000 to 9,000' flag waving Chileans. '...During the day, Senor Vega, the leading photographer of the town placed his fine dark rooms at my disposal and I spent most of the time in developing....' (F. Hurley, Endurance Diary). The Chilean photographer produced a number of portraits of Shackleton and his officers during their stay, and Hurley made his first prints from his glass negatives, from his small V.P.K. sheet negatives and his cine film. For a group of photographs by Veiga and Hurley printed in Punta Arenas, see Christie's, 17 Sept. 1998, lot 209.
