[With:] FRAUNFELTER CHINA COMPANY (manufacturers). A high-sided bowl and cover, height: 4 in. (10.5cm.), decorated with blue bands and transfer-printed inscription 'Byrd Antarctic Expedition II "Bear of Oakland"' below a side-view of the ship, the base of the bowl with gilt transfer-printed inscription (see above) partially obscuring brown/green printed mark 'Fraunfelter China Ohio'.
Byrd's second expedition was served by two vessels: the Jacob Ruppert (commanded by Verleger and Rose) and the Bear of Oakland (commanded by Robert English). 'Little America II', with ten new buildings, was established in the Bay of Whales, Ross Ice Shelf. A number of flights were made, an extensive scientific programme was pursued, a post-office set up (with Byrd as the designated post-master) and for the first time regular radio broadcasts were transmitted to the United States.
