In J. Mahajan's The Raj Landscape, New Delhi, 1988, he quotes Thomas Twinning's description of the Calcutta garden houses 'all white, their roofs invariably flat, surrounded by light colonnades, and their fronts relieved by lofty columns supporting deep verandahs...' (pp. 40-41).
