Lot Essay

A set of views of India including a view of Vizagapatnam by Captain Elisha Trapaud was published by John Wells in 1788.

Vizagapatam, (Visakhapatman) a major port on the east coast between Calcutta and Madras, attracted a thriving community of European traders. In 1687, the East India Company set up an English factory and the city soon became a noted centre of furniture production specifically making ivory inlaid and ivory veneered furniture, examples of which can be seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and at Powyss Castle, Wales.
