Lot Essay

The present watercolour is a highly unusual panoramic view of Delhi from the north. Visible across the horizon are part of the River Jumna (left), the Mughal Red Fort (centre), the Jami Masjid (centre right), and a little further to the right the elevation known as Raisina (later the site of Lutyens' New Delhi). The view is taken from the northern ridge, the area of British residence in the decades before the 1857 Revolt.
