A RARE WORK covering a pivotal period in Nepalese history. Jung Bahadur seized power in Nepal in September 1846 after a period of much political uncertainty - by the time of his death in 1877 his country had enjoyed perhaps its longest period of uninterrupted peace and relative prosperity. In the period immediately following his coming to power the turmoil continued, but by 1850 Jung Bahadur had installed his family in many of the positions of power and was confident enough of his own position to arrange a Mission to England (the author of the present work was, in effect, appointed the mission's liason officer). An astute politician and diplomat, Jung Bahadur's reasons for the visit included a wish to meet and speak with the ruler of the British Empire and to judge the true extent of the power that the British wielded. In addition it offered the chance to consolidate his own position in the region by becoming known, amongst his neighbours, as a friend of the British who could call upon them if threatened. The present work includes notes on many of these events, together with the historical background and valuable notes on the people, commerce and topography of the country.
