Lot Essay

These medallions are based on those by Count Fedor Petrovich Tolstoy (1783-1873), grandfather of legendary Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, author of War and Peace. He was appointed in 1810 as a designer for medals for the St. Petersburg Mint and was best known for his series of medallions commemorating the Russian Campaign against Napoleon.

Two medallions from the orignial series were sold Sotheby's London, 15 December 1995, lot 555 (£2185).
