Further details
The proportions and constructional aspects of the 31-type armchair included in this lot are consistent with the features associated with early production armchairs of this type (cf. Important Design, Christie's South Kensington, 14 June 2000, lot 6; Scandinavian Design, Christie's South Kensington, 15 September 1999, lot 5).The example offered features the characteristic stepped laminate configuration to the cantilever supports, and the squared seat is affixed to the frame without exposed tenons. Similar details are illustrated in the two other seats included in this lot, and all chairs feature plywood reinforcing panels to the underside of the seats in order to preserve stability. The rigid, non-cantilever structure of the third armchair is suggestive of both the 31 and Paimio armchairs. All chairs may originally have been finished in a subdued olive-green for the seat, and a terracotta finish for the arms.
