A rare 17th century fan, the leaf painted with Cupid watching over a series of scenes in a gentleman's life; to the left he brings flowers to a lady watching from a window, next he attends her toilette; admires a large litter of puppies; next she stokes his head as he sits on her lap; in the centre an elderly gentleman kneels before a lady holding a miniature and a fan ; the gentleman wearing a muff trimmed with red bow and talks to a lawyer; later he dances with two ladies; to the right a gentleman in court dress has a vision of thirty virgins, the verso painted with two ladies, one playing the mandolin, and two chinoiserie figures, birds and flowers, the ivory sticks lacquered with nymphs and putti - 11in.
