Lot Essay

Thomas Chippendale (d. 1779) published designs for Chinese chairs in his The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Directors, published between 1754 and 1762. They were described as 'very proper for a Lady's Dressing-Room: especially if it is hung with India Paper. They will likewise suit Chinese Temples.' The back of this chair relates in part to one illustrated in plate XXIII from the 1st edition of his Director, 1754.
