Including four open armchairs, each with a tablet toprail decorated with a Classical scene, above a turned splat and flanked by scrolled stiles, the armchairs with scrolled arms, above a caned seat, on sabre legs, redecorated (14)

Bought from Denys Wrey Antiques, Sloane Street, in the early 1960s, and by descent.

Lot Essay

A Grecian-scrolled 'Herculaneum'’ chair pattern, with tablet vignette inspired by painted Grecian vases as found at Pompeii or Herculaneum, featured in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet Dictionary, 1803 (pl. 7). A set of four armchairs of this pattern was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 26 July 1979, lot 102. A pair of related armchairs, with similarly painted tablets, was sold Sotheby'’s London, 7 April 1998, lot 80.
