The voluted form of the sofa's arms relates to a pattern which featured in George Smith's Cabinet Maker's and Upholsterer's Guide, 1826 (E. T. Joy, Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, Woodbridge, 1977, p. 292).
