With fluted frame, the oval padded back, armrests and serpentine seat covered in brown leather, with fluted arm-supports, on cabriole legs headed by foliage swags, the seat upholstery distressed

Lot Essay

The seat-frame is serpentined in the French manner and relates to a 'Modern' chair pattern in Thomas Malton's Complete Treatise on Perpsective, 1775 (pl. XXXIII, fig. 131). A pair of gilt armchairs of this pattern from the collection of S. P. Adams of Messrs. Copper & Adams was sold Bonhams London, 8 May 1996 (lot 41).
