Inlaid overall with boxwood and ebony lines, the rounded rectangular twin-flap top, crossbanded in rosewood, above two frieze drawers to each side, on rectangular end-supports joined by an arched stretcher, on splayed legs, brass caps and castors, one stretcher replaced, restorations, one handle replaced

Lot Essay

Betjeman, whose poetry so precisly rendered social nuances and evoked a sense of nostalgia for the recent past, was also an authority on English architecture and topography. He was knighted in 1969 and became Poet Laureate in 1972.
