A GILT-GESSO CENTRE TABLE
Of George II style, late 19th early 20th Century
Carved overall with scrolling foliage and strapwork, the rectangular moulded top above a concave frieze and shaped apron centred by a shell, on square tapering legs and hoof feet, minor losses to gesso, restorations to the surface

Lot Essay

The table top's scrolled compartment is framed by flowered acanthus scrolls in the Louis Quatorze fashion popularised around l700 by Daniel Marot's Livres d'Appartements, and relates to gessoed furniture supplied for Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire and attributed to James Moore (d. 1726) (R. Edwards and P. Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture, vol. II, London, 1924-7, p. 240).
