This table relates closely to one supplied by Thomas Chippendale to Sir Edward Knatchbull, Bt., for Mersham-le-Hatch, Kent, in 1768 and described as 'a neat Mahogany 8 leg Table of fine wood £2.2.0' (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. II, fig. 410 and pp. 222, 230). The present example differs from the latter in having only six feet. A closely related spider-gateleg table was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 13 November 1997, lot 75.
