Lot Essay

Tables of related form, with scrolled legs and with specimen marble tops, were made by William Trotter for Paxton, Berwickshire in 1814 (F. Bamford, A Dictionary of Edinburgh Wrights and Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1983, pls. 54a, 54b, 55a).

This table formed part of the furnishings of Bradwell Lodge when owned by Tom Driberg, the founder of 'William Hickey' in the Daily Express. He was later a politician and was made a life peer.
