Lot Essay

Charles Wade (1883-1956) was an architect, artist and craftsman from Yoxford in Suffolk, who devoted his life to amassing an enormous and varied collection of craftsmanship, mostly bought in antique shops and from dealers. In 1919 he bought and restored the semi-derelict Snowshill Manor in Gloucestershire, and filled it with his eclectic collection. In 1951 he gave the house and its contents to the National Trust.

The mirrors with their serpentined and arched cresting are similar to that of a walnut cabinet of the 1720s bearing the initials 'IB' and associated with John Belchier of St. Paul's Churchyard (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, figs. 60 and 61).
