The yellow animal with brown mane and tail tip, standing with its left forepaw balancing on a ball painted with black vermiculé, raised on a rectangular 'table' base moulded with colorful flower garlands, the front inscribed on two oval bosses 'THE RORAN (sic) LION'

Lot Essay

This lion is after a model by the Italian sculptor Flaminio Vacca known as the Medici lions. It is based on the left-hand example of a pair which flank the entrance to the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence.
