Lot Essay
This pair of chandeliers includes many design characteristics based on Boulle's work. The female masks and acanthus-sheathed knop are found on a similar chandelier attributed to Boulle with oval portrait busts which was sold Christie's New York, 21 May, 1996, lot 316 ($410,000). Its design was directly inspired by an engraving published by the ornemaniste Daniel Marot in 1710 in his Nouveau Livre d'Orfeverie (reproduced in H. Ottomeyer and P. Proschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, vol. I, 1986, fig. 16.1).
A chandelier of near identical design was sold in these rooms, 23 October 1998, lot 102. ($134,500)
