Lot Essay

This type of religious carving was influenced by Iberian prototypes and is generally believed to have been executed by craftsmen of Chinese extraction in the Philippines. They were made for both the local Christian communities and for the export to Europe. Similar examples are illustrated by Margarita M. Estella, La Escultura Baroca de Marfil en Espana: Escuelas Europas y Coloniales, figs. 245-248. Another one is illustrated by Richard H. Randall, Jr., Masterpieces of Ivory from the Walters Art Gallery, 1985, no. 477. An ivory Christ child figure was sold in our London Rooms, The China Trade Sale, 5th April 2000, lot 148.
