Lot Essay
Although the dimensions of the present lot are those of a cabinet-piece, its character brings to mind the large-scale decorative schemes displayed in parlours and dining rooms in Holland in the second half of the eighteenth Century. Earlier in the Century, Italianate views were the fashion, whereas later, typical Netherlandish or Rhenish landscapes came into favour. (W. Loos et al , On Country Roads and Fields, exhibition catalogue, 28 November 1997-3 March 1998, pp.37 ff).
